چکیده

We developed a method to measure the compliance, defined as AV/AP, of the total systemic vascular bed (Ct) without stopping systemic flow. In 10 open-chest dogs, venous return (and cardiac output) was maintained at a constant level by inserting a perfusion pump (with no reservoir) between the caval veins and the right atrium. About 5% of the estimated total blood volume was withdrawn from the dog within 45 seconds. Resultant changes in central venous pressure were measured 10, 30, 60, 120, and 180 seconds after the volume change. The bled volume was then reinfused to repeat similar venous pressure measurements for another 180 seconds. The measurements were repeated after slightly increasing the blood volume or sectioning the vagi. The mean value of Ct measured 10 seconds after hemorrhage or reinfusion was 1.96 ±0.10 (SE) ml/mm Hg/kg body weight before vagotomy. Paired i-tests indicated no significant difference between measurements of bleeding and reinfusion, measurements with different initial venous pressures or blood volume, or measurements before and after vagotomy. However, Ct increased with time during the 2-minute period by about 25% of the initial 10-second value (P < 0.001) and remained constant thereafter.

Control of total systemic vascular capacity by the carotid sinus baroreceptor reflex.

To attain a quantitative understanding of carotid sinus baroreceptor reflex control of cardiac output, we studied the reflex control of total systemic vascular capacity in vagotomized dogs. In experiments measuring blood volume shifts caused by the carotid sinus reflex (series 1), venous return was diverted into a reservoir while cardiac output and central venous pressure were maintained at con...

Epinephrine and the carotid sinus baroreceptor reflex. Influence on capacitive and resistive properties of the total systemic vascular bed of the dog.

To quantify the interaction between epinephrine infusion and carotid sinus baroreceptor reflex control of vascular capacity and resistance, we have simultaneously measured total systemic compliance, Ct, arterial compliance, Ca, changes in "unstressed vascular volume," AV0, and resistance, R, in nine dogs whose carotid sinuses were isolated and cardiac output fixed by a perfusion pump. In respon...

The importance of the spleen in blood volume shifts of the systemic vascular bed caused by the carotid sinus baroreceptor reflex in the dog.

To quantify the relative importance of the spleen in the carotid sinus baroreceptor reflex control of total blood volume, we studied the reflex control of systemic vascular capacity before and after removal of the spleen in 18 sodium pentobarbital-anesthetized dogs. Venous return was diverted into a reservoir while cardiac output and venous pressure were maintained constant. Intrasinus pressure...

Arterial compliance in patients with cirrhosis: stroke volume-pulse pressure ratio as simplified index.

Arterial function may be altered in patients with cirrhosis. We determined compliance of the arterial tree (C(1)) in relation to systemic and splanchnic hemodynamic derangement and clinical variables. C(1) and the stroke volume-pulse pressure index (SV/PP) were significantly higher (+62% and +40%, respectively; P < 0.001) in cirrhotic patients (n = 49) than in control subjects (n = 19), and a c...
